Irish Medium Teacher Education

3 June 2011

St Mary's University College is pleased to announce the end of year celebration for this year’s programme in Irish-medium teacher education.

This year, the ceremony will celebrate the achievements of students in Irish-medium teacher education who have followed three different programmes. Certificates of Bilingual Education will be presented to final year BEd students and PGCE (Primary) students, as well as those who have taken the PGCE (Post-Primary) enhancement programme.

This diversity of provision is matched by the fact that the students themselves proudly hail from different parts of the country: from the city of Belfast, elsewhere in the north, including the Donegal Gaeltacht, as well as from counties Dublin, Kildare, Meath, Sligo and the Kerry Gaeltacht.

The event will take place in the College on Thursday 9th June and will commence at 10am with Mass celebrated in the college chapel by Bishop Dónal McKeown, following which the primary students will be presented with their Religious Education Certificates.

At 11.30am both the primary and post-primary students will receive their Certificates in Bilingual Education, presented by Gerry Devlin (General Teaching Council, Northern Ireland GTCNI) and two PGCE students (one primary & one post-primary) will be presented with the Comhairle na Gaelscolaíochta 'Student of the Year Award'. A student will also be awarded the College 'Corn Ghaeltacht Bhéal Feirste' (Belfast Gaeltacht Trophy) in acknowledgment of outstanding consideration of and contribution to the Irish language community. A buffet lunch will follow for the students, their families, guests and staff.
