Narrow defeat in Sigerson

6 February 2014

St Mary’s Senior Football Team exited the Sigerson Cup competition on Wednesday, 5 February, after a one-point defeat to current Sigerson cup holders, the Dublin Institute of Technology (DIT).

Coach Paddy Tally and his players were devastated after the game, but those looking on from a distance can point to the integrity of the team remaining intact. A team of full-time students on full-time courses played entirely within the spirit of the intervarsity competition.

The integrity of the Sigerson Cup competition has been potentially compromised in recent years by problems related to the determination of player eligibility. The procedures that are presently in places, as many officials are probably aware, have not been effective.

Team Captain, Danny McBride, ready to lead his team out against DIT for the last time.
