Sigerson Cup Victory

NUIG 1-11
St Mary’s 1-11
(St Mary’s win 4-2 on frees)

St Mary’s University College qualified for the third round of the Sigerson Cup after beating National University of Ireland, Galway (NUIG) on frees following a dramatic first-round tie in Galway.

“The Ranch” trailed by two at the break after Aaron Boyle converted a penalty while the Galway men responded with a goal from the next attack. Shane McGuigan and Liam Rafferty kicked scores for the Belfast side before Daniel McKinless landed an equaliser at the death to send the game to extra time.

History would repeat itself in extra time as once again Stephen McConville saved Gavin McGilly’s side with another leveller. This score would see the two teams locked at the hip once again after extra time.

A free-kick competition was needed to decide the outcome, which St Mary’s won 4-2.
