Young Newsreaders Celebration

24 June 2021

The pupils participating in the St Mary’s Critical Media Literacy Project, "Young Newsreaders", all received their certificates as they finished up what has been a challenging year for them. The initiative uses a teacher resource created by St Mary’s Senior Lecturer in Literacy, Donna Hazzard, and, in partnership with the Irish News, is aimed at improving literacy for students in Key Stages 2 and 3.

Feedback has been extremely positive with one teacher highlighting the positive impact it has had on her class:

“To hear eight-year-old children discussing their work with each other and talking with such enthusiasm about their ideas, their articles, illustrations, captions and headlines highlighted the highly engaging aspect of the project”.

The schools featured are:

St John the Baptist Primary School, Belfast

Assumption Grammar School, Ballynahinch

St John the Baptist College, Portadown
